What things in Internet of Things (IoT) means for your business?

Blog

The tsunami of inter connectivity among all of the objects, from door locks to toll booths to refrigerators and everything from smartphones, coffeemakers, cars and lamps to anything with an on-off switch, has led to the Internet of Things (IoT). It is a world in which objects, animals or people are provided with unique identifiers that have the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. Internet of things IoT has evolved from the convergence of wireless technologies, Micro-Electromechanical systems (MEMs) and the Internet.

M2M is a subset of IOT

Internet of Things (IoT) revolves around increased machine-to-machine communication (M2M); it’s built on cloud computing and networks of data-gathering sensors; it’s mobile, virtual, and instantaneous connection; and it’s going to make everything in our lives from streetlights to seaports “smart.”
So much of the chatter has been focused on machine-to-machine communication (M2M) : devices talking to like devices. M2M is been used everywhere in our daily life.
For eg.
Personnel Security system in your companies, just like using your employee card to unlock a door. When the security detector receives the ID from the employee card and then unlock the door once the ID is approved.

When we talk about making machines “smart” we are not referring strictly to M2M. We are talking about sensors. So now we have sensors monitoring and tracking all sorts of data; we have cloud-based apps translating that data into useful intelligence and transmitting it to machines on the ground, enabling mobile, real-time responses. And thus bridges become smart bridges and cars smart cars. And soon, we have smart cities and…

IoT at Work

The iBeacon of Apple is a good example of Internet of Things (IoT). Apple made its own protocol. It is nothing special. It is just a broadcaster on Bluetooth Low Energy. Many other retail stores and merchants also have their own BLE protocols and broadcast as well to communicate with customers via apps, allowing them to share offers, send alerts and advertise to consumers.
Internet of Things is definitely becoming a Thing, in the same way that Big Data is a Thing or the sharing economy’s a Thing. With the hype over the Internet of Things behind us. Because whether or not it’s a Thing, the internet of things is already a lot of things.
Some applications that will be implemented at the consumer and civic level that we think will make Internet of Things (IoT) a critically important part of our daily lives:

  • Smart Homes: While leaving office, switch on the AC of the car, check what all groceries you have in your fridge, draw the curtains of your bedroom, tell it to switch on lights in 15 minutes, and start recording the next episode of big bang theory. All this while going down the stairs to your car in your smart home. Companies have realized the potential of smart homes and have started working on it to make their companies ‘smart’.
  • Industrial Applications including Internet-managed assembly lines, connected factories, and warehouses. For eg. Resource allocation, Asset Management, Supply Chain Handling can be fully automated. These steps can really reduce the people working in a manufacturing plant.
  • Safety and Monitoring Devices such as baby and assisted living monitoring systems, smoke detectors, fire hydrants, cameras, sensor-equipped drawers and wardrobes and home alarm systems. For eg. Virtual key lock, your friends or relatives can unlock your home in your absence, you just have to share the authorized access code.
  • Healthcare :  Wearable Technologies that can measure exercise, steps, sleep, weight, blood pressure, and other statistics. For eg. Sparked, a Dutch start up, implant sensors in the ears of cattle to monitor cows’ health and whereabouts. That is IoT.
  • Intelligent Traffic Management Systems including toll-taking operations, congestion penalties, and smart parking-space management. For eg. If we detect that a road is blocked using those sensors and your cars have built in GPS then it will suggest the routes to avoid blocked roads, this would really improve traffic congestion.
  • Waste Management Systems such as garbage cans and recycle bins with RFID tags that allow sanitation staff to see when garbage has been put out.
For eg.”Pay-As-You-Throw (PAYT)” programs are likely to decrease garbage waste and increase recycling efforts.

IoT at Work
Internet of Things (IoT) will change cyber security and advertising in a better way, shift vendor/buyer relationship from a single transaction to a service oriented relationship.

IoT is more than a matter of scale
According to Gartner, with a $19 trillion market internet of things with 90 things connecting with the internet every second, it is believed that about 50 billion things will be connected to the Internet of Things (Internet of Everything) by 2020. Surely, IoT will be on the radar of futuristic policy makers. Because if a country can gain a monopoly in this technology, another silicon valley can be created.
So, Big data is required to store the huge chunk of data you are generating in your daily life. And a good system is required to analyse and generate proper alarms / notifications for you. A car / refrigerator can only save and analyse data related to them so there needs to be a place where all data from all devices are required. Hence, we need Internet of Things, Big Data and other systems like NOSQL database systems, etc.

Smartphones will become not only everyone’s portal into IoT ecosystem (look no further than smartphone-controlled light bulbs), but a complete remote control to your life (if it isn’t already). Everyone should think outside the four walls and mobilize their enterprise.
After a time, the question will become, What applications won’t the Internet Of Things (IoT) touch? So, According to you, What things are included in Internet of Things(IoT) ? Is your business ready for Internet of Things (IoT) ? How will your company prepare for Internet of Things (IoT)?
